McKenzie on Canucks' trade deadline philosophy
/Bob McKenzie was on Vancouver’s TSN 1040 on Tuesday morning.
On what he’s hearing about the Canucks adding a scorer or a defenceman ahead of the trade deadline:
“Well, I think all along they’ve been interested. Even before the ups and downs of the season, they probably wanted to add a scorer at any given time, and they’ll continue to look at that. But as I’ve said many times before, I think they’ll be fairly careful in terms of the assets that they give up and how they go about this.
“So with Bieksa out of the lineup, I don’t know that they’re necessarily that interested in going out and getting other defenceman right now. They’ll give Corrado a chance to see what he can do here and see how the team fares without Bieksa.”
On Trevor Linden’s comments over the weekend regarding the Ryan O’Reilly and Alex Edler trade talk, and what the Canucks might actually do – if anything - before the deadline:
“Well, it might be that they do nothing. As I said – is there interest in doing something? Yes. Only if it makes sense and only if it stays within the plan that Jim Benning has put in place. I’d be really surprised if the Canucks go down the rental road to give up a future asset to give them an expiring contract that gives them a better chance of making the playoffs. I think there’s a recognition here that they need to make hockey deals less than rental deals, and that is a much harder thing to do and I don’t think they’re in the mode where they want to give away young kids for a quick fix.”
