Doughty: Gaborik 'fit right in' with Kings
/Drew Doughty joined Sportsnet 590 on Thursday morning, reflecting back on another Los Angeles Kings Stanley Cup championship.
On what he thought about Marian Gaborik at the time of the trade, and then again several months later after having won the Cup:
“Well, when Gabby first came in, obviously the question was is he going to fit into our system. The way Darryl coaches us is he wants a rough, tough game. He wants a good defensive game. He wants to create opportunities offensively through that. From playing against Gabby in the past, and stuff like that, he seemed like he was kind of looking for opportunities. Kind of cheating, in ways. But really, it’s just him being smart. So I didn’t think he’d fit into our system so well, but right away we could just see that he’s a good two-way hockey player. He played in Minnesota before, which is a very defensive system. So I’m sure he learned a lot there. He fit right in. Him and Kopitar clicked right off the bat and we’re so happy to have Gabby signed back with us again, cuz those two can be quite a dynamic duo and make a difference for the L.A. Kings.”
On two wins and counting:
“People keep talking about us being this dynasty team, and you know, I think we have the opportunity to do that, but we haven’t done it yet and we have a lot more work to do before we can be called that.”
