Fetisov vs. Tretiak to lead Russian hockey

The Windsor Star’s Bob Duff writes that Viacheslav Fetisov will be going head-to-head with incumbent Vladislav Tretiak in voting Tuesday as the two hockey legends battle for the presidency of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation.

“The system we have doesn’t work,” Fetisov said in a telephone interview from Moscow. “There are no coaching schools, no competition throughout the whole of Russia.

“There is no structure to the competition to allow our players to become premier hockey players. The biggest concern in our system, especially for the youngsters, is that there’s new technology, new ways of hockey development that are available right now, but we still work with the old system and that continues even in the biggest tournaments like the Olympic Games and the world juniors.”
