St. Louis offers advice to Flames' Gaudreau

With the New York Rangers and Calgary Flames hooking up Friday night and with one of the big stories surrounding the Flames these days being their smallish but outstanding prospect college star Johnny Gaudreau, naturally Martin St. Louis was asked for a few thoughts. These come via The Calgary Sun.

“It’s all about speed. Size doesn’t matter. It’s all about speed,” St. Louis said.

“You can see there are a lot of small guys playing. If he’s got the speed, you can’t worry about his size.”

On being well-rounded: “The thing about a small guy is you can’t get labelled as just an offensive guy,” said St. Louis. “You’ve got to bring more to the table. If you don’t score 40 or 30 goals, you’ve got to bring something else to the table. You can’t just think offensively.”

Also: “I think there’s a lot more defensive hockey in the college level now, with video and scouting. We didn’t have that. You’d just go play.

“He’s probably better prepared to play a two-way game than I was.”
