Oilers, Smyth haven't discussed trade

The Edmonton Journal indicates 38-year-old winger Ryan Smyth says the Oilers haven't asked him if he would go to another team and he hasn't gone to the team and said he'd like to play for a contender seeking a rental either.

“This (trading him and trying to get an asset for a 38-year-0ld on the last year of a two-year contract) is obviously Mac’s choice,” said Smyth.  “Everybody knows I’m an Oiler. My heart was set on coming back here (from Los Angeles), looking at the tremendous upside of the team where we could be a playoff contender…obviously we’ve fallen short, but as a family we’re staying here when my career is done. It’s a great city, we love it here.”

“This (possible trade as a UFA) is totally different than the last time. My name hasn’t been thrown out there. Little bits here and there, but…” said Smyth, laughing at the suggestion he’s gone to MacTavish to “talk about his future” as Marty St. Louis has done in Tampa Bay with his GM Steve Yzerman. “We are both 38 though.
