Insider Trading
/Darren Dreger and Bob McKenzie were on TSN's Insider Trading on Thursday evening.
McKenzie: Evander Kane's health is key to the trade situation.
Dreger, on who would be interested in Kane: "Well, there would be a ton. And most of the top contenders definitely will show interest. We're talking about the Pittsburgh Penguins. We're talking about the Boston Bruins. If you look in the Western Conference, you've got the likes of the Anaheim Ducks, most definitely will inquire - if they haven't already - on Evander Kane. You've got the Vancouver Canucks, who would love to bring the hometown kid back to Vancouver. They've been looking for additional scoring and want a top-6 forward. The Montreal Canadiens. Again, interest in Evander Kane.
"But there'll be a lot of tough questions answered of Kevin Cheveldayoff specific to the injury of Evander Kane.
"But when you look at the big picture here, the Winnipeg Jets need a couple of big pieces here. They need something that is going to help this club in the short term, to make sure they hold on to their spot in the Western Conference playoffs. And they also need something on the long term because of the quality of Evander Kane. You're talking about three years remaining, and a cap hit that's very affordable at $4.25 million, there'll be a ton of interest."
Kane jumps right to the top of the TSN Trade Bait board: 1) Evander Kane 2) Antoine Vermette 3) Cody Franson 4) Daniel Winnik 5) Chris Neil
Dreger: Trade offers for Leafs are expected soon. Franson, Winnik, Santorelli. Leafs' Nonis and Preds' Poile met.
McKenzie: Hockey Canada has a big meeting on Friday for Team Canada 2016, and 2015 World Championships. Hope to have a team in place by March at the GM meetings in Florida.
"When you're talking about potential people that would be in that management team, the guys from the Olympic team: Doug Armstrong, Kenny Holland, Peter Chiarelli, Kevin Lowe. But also some new names: Rob Blake, Brendan Shanahan. As well as Marc Bergevin of the Montreal Canadiens. And, get this, Marty Brodeur - recently retired as a future Hall of Fame goaltender. Hockey Canada, historically, has always loved to get those guys like Steve Yzerman, Wayne Gretzky, and others, coming directly out of their playing days and get them involved with the program."
Dreger, on if changes to the Arizona Coyotes could include the guy behind the bench: "Yeah, it could. He's got three years remaining and it's believed Dave Tippett is earning $2 million per. That's a (lot) for new ownership of the Arizona Coyotes. Some around the league are wondering whether this guy is in it for the long haul, or whether the organization wants to pay him that much money on that term to go through another rebuild. The same questions are being asked of Don Maloney and potentially Sean Burke. But all of that will get dealt with in the off-season."
