Guerin reflects on trade from Oilers to Bruins
/Pittsburgh Penguins AGM Bill Guerin was on Edmonton’s 630 CHED on Wednesday afternoon.
On if now that he’s in the management role, he can understand the business aspect of it when Kevin Lowe proactively traded him from the Oilers to Boston despite a good run from Guerin and his linemates:
“I think all three of us – Dougie, myself and Ryan – I think we were Top 10 in scoring. It was early in the year, but Kevin did what he had to do at the right time. I think he maxed out what he could get.
“I understood it then. I mean, like I said, that’s what we sign up for.
“It caught me way off guard here. I had forgotten my phone in the car... My daughter was skating at the West Edmonton Mall and there was another guy, just standing there and watching his son or daughter.
“He said, ‘What are you doing here?’
“I said, ‘I’m just watching my daughter skate.’
“He said, ‘Well, I figured you’d be gone by now.’
“I said, ‘ What are you talking about?’
“He said, ‘Well, I heard you were traded to Boston.’
“I’m like, ‘Uh-oh.’
“It’s so far back, I went to a payphone and called my agent. I went out to the car afterwards and I had 50 missed calls and I think 49 of them were from Kevin. He tried to get in touch with me. But that was a different time.
“But he did what he had to do. I never held a grudge. That’s the business. I always have fond memories of playing here in Edmonton. I really did love it.”
