McKenzie: Benning, Bergevin share long-term trade deadline outlook

Bob McKenzie was on Vancouver’s TSN 1040 on Tuesday morning.

On if Jim Benning is going to be a buyer or a seller:

“Well, I think he’s a buyer, but I think he’s – I’d probably categorize him in some ways the same way that I would categorize Marc Bergevin. That is, these guys come in and they take over a team and they’ve got a plan. The plan is not to waste future assets on short-term fixes to try to get you into the playoffs knowing that the impact of those deals is going to ultimately be counterproductive in the long term. It might be helpful in the very short term, but counterproductive in the long term.

“So I think Jim Benning knows the kind of players that he wants. He probably is real hesitant to give up future assets for rentals. And that he’s probably looking to make hockey deals. That is, bring somebody in who, if they are an older player, not too old and somebody who’s under contract and you know they’re going to be a benefit to the team for the next two or three or four years because that’s ultimately where he’s looking.

“And yet he knows he’s got a veteran team here. He’s got to be careful because the clock’s ticking on the veteran players on this team. And that’s the all the more reason though, why you don’t give up really high-quality draft picks, top prospects, or young players that are on your team.”
