LeBrun: Panthers "more than happy" to deal Markstrom
/Pierre LeBrun was on TSN 1040 Monday afternoon.
Part of the discussion centred on the Vancouver Canucks potentially keeping Jacob Markstrom on the roster, in addition to Ryan Miller and Eddie Lack, rather than risk losing Markstrom on waivers. LeBrun was asked whether or not Markstrom would have any trade value with his current AAV of $1.2 million.
“You know, it’s a good question. It would have to be a deal where if you’re Jim Benning you structure some kind of framework where if he plays better than he has, you get some return value. Like, to be determined, in other words.
“Because I’ll be quite honest, the Panthers were really not impressed with him. I mean, they really thought that he nosedived as a prospect. And it’s why they were more than happy to include him in that deal. I’m just being honest.
“But he’s so young, and a lot of goalies take forever to develop. It may well be that they cut bait too fast on that.
“So I think if you’re trying to find value for him, I would structure a deal where if he plays in X number of games this year, it’s this pick. But if he plays in, etc...
“So you protect yourself in case he takes fire once he leaves your organization. That’s the way I would do it.”
