Scotty Bowman likes pace of today's game

The Pioneer Press reflects on the illustrious NHL history of 80-year-old Scotty Bowman, who is senior advisor to hockey operations for the Chicago Blackhawks these days.

How is the working relationship with his son, Stan, the GM?

"I don't get as involved as some people think because I think it's better for him, better for me," Scotty Bowman said. "I don't talk to him on a daily basis. If he asks me something, I'll tell him. But he doesn't do it all the time. He's got to run his own team. It's worked out real good for him."

On the NHL today:

"I like you get a lot of sustained action; you don't have a lot of whistles," he said. "That's made the game faster. Some people think it's more dangerous because of the speed. A lot of times now it's even difficult to put the TV timeout in.

"From a fan (perspective), you've got to pay attention. You can't leave your seat or you'll miss quite a bit."
