Blues giving Elliott a 'fair fight'

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch points out that Brian Elliott has fought a reputation for being no more than an above-average backup goaltender.

Now, armed with a new three-year deal, Elliott will have a chance to go toe-to-toe with blue chip prospect Jake Allen for starts next season.

“I think they’re really saying this is a way more fair fight than being with Jaro and his contract situation, being a highly paid guy,” Elliott said. “And obviously bringing in Miller, they gave up a lot of assets to bring him in ... that forces you to go with them basically. Even if I played well and got a shutout, it wasn’t like I was playing the next game.

“Now I think if you play well and earn an opportunity, you’ll get an opportunity. Having the commitment from them really shows that. It shows that they believe in me. I feel like I have been getting better my three years in St. Louis and I just want to continue that upward trend. I’m saying, ‘Why can’t I be getting better?’”
