Canes, Gerbe rewarded from mutual 'leap of faith'

The News & Observer details how well Nathan Gerbe's time with the Carolina Hurricanes has worked out since he was bought out by the Buffalo Sabres.

“With the  cap and everything, it’s tough to get contracts,” Gerbe said. “There still are a lot of players who don’t have contracts. It’s a tough situation, but for me it’s all about trusting your abilities. It sometimes takes a leap of faith but it worked out here for me and I’m pretty happy.”

Canes coach Kirk Muller has liked Gerbe's attitude and game.

“He came in with no guarantees or promises and earned his ice time,” Muller said. “The thing with ‘Gerbs’ has been he has been very versatile. Penalty killing, power play, different line mates, playing left or right (wing), you can put him with every group and he’s good with it.

“He’s been very durable for us. Plays hard. He’s the typical little guy who knows he has to play hard every night to stay in the lineup, and he’s pretty mentally tough.”
