Burke's presence 'invaluable' for Treliving
/Phoenix Coyotes general manager Don Maloney tells The Calgary Sun that he and former assistant GM Brad Treliving, now the GM for the Flames, would speak constantly over the years.
“It wasn't a situation where we would talk on a daily basis. We'd talk, probably, on an hourly basis,” said Maloney. “Losing a confidante, a guy that was exposed to everything, doesn't exactly make my day ... But for us here in Phoenix, I'm really proud and happy for him and his family. When you work as hard as he did, he deserves an opportunity to run an NHL club.”
Maloney sees the Flames situation as an ideal spot for Treliving.
“When I look at Calgary, with Brian Burke there, I look at that as a good thing for a young manager coming into the league. Brian is very loyal to his people,” Maloney said. “My first job as a manager was with the Islanders a hundred years ago, and at that time, Bill Torrey was placed in an advisory role for a year. It was excellent. He left after a year, which I thought was a real loss.
“For somebody like Brad that's certainly enthusiastic and has a ton of ideas, to have somebody that's seen it all and done it all, a confidante that you can go to, it's invaluable ... When I looked, for Brad's sake, at Calgary, I thought it was a great opportunity for him to get himself established.”
