Blue Jackets' Kekalainen: A captain will reveal himself
/The Columbus Dispatch reflects on the job Jarmo Kekalainen has done since taking over as the GM of the Blue Jackets.
On the topic of the team not choosing a captain, Kekalainen said Saturday: “A captain will reveal himself. It will be someone who is a captain on and off the ice, who says and does the right things at the right time, who doesn’t say anything when nothing needs to be said. It will become obvious.”
He also said, “You have to take pride in what you represent. We want guys who are about their teammates as well as themselves. True leadership is helping the guy who sits next to you. Sometimes that means picking a guy up when he’s down, and sometimes that means taking a guy down a peg if he’s getting too high.”
On Marian Gaborik, Kekalainen said: “It’s something we tried for the short term, hoping that it would work long term, and it didn’t.”
