Dreger: Nill, Stars positioned to "add the necessary pieces"

Darren Dreger was on Edmonton’s TSN 1260 on Tuesday morning.

On the Dallas Stars not facing as much pressure from the fan base with this slow start, compared with a market like Edmonton, and how as long as the Cowboys are in contention nobody cares about anything else:

“Yeah, pretty much. I wouldn’t say no one, but you fly deep under the radar there for that obvious reason. You still have your collection of Stars’ faithful and they have high expectations here. This is an organization that’s enjoyed its share of ultimate success over the years.

“I still like what Jim Nill has done. I like what he did in the offseason. I think that he vastly improved his team. I still think that there are areas of concern. In goal, he’s got a good No. 1, but beyond that he doesn’t have much. And I think that’s an area he’s probably going to have to address sooner rather than later. But he’s also made some shrewd moves that have freed up some cap space, so when the time is right Jim Nill is going to be able to add the necessary pieces.

“So I think he’s done a good job of selling that market on a renovation. Not a rebuild, because it wasn’t necessary in Dallas. But the pieces that he added, the moves that he’s made to generate a bit of financial flexibility, that sells hope there that maybe they started a little poorer than what they were hoping - than most of us projected - but there’s still a lot reason to believe that based on time left in this season, they’re going to be able to compete with the big dogs.”
