Dreger only hearing "pure media speculation" on Habs' trade front

Darren Dreger was on TSN 690 Thursday morning.

On if he’s hearing anything on the trade front that involves the Montreal Canadiens:

“No, you know what... the only thing we’re hearing is pure media speculation. That’s what we’re hearing. And it’s obvious why you’d speculate, when you look at the depth now the Montreal Canadiens have on their blueline. Could another piece be moved out? Beaulieu’s name has been thrown out there, but only from a media standpoint.

“One thing we know about Marc Bergevin is he’s a pretty open guy, but only to a point. He’s got media savvy and he’s not afraid to speak to his fans and all of that, but only to a point. He does great work behind the scenes. I’ll give him a ton of credit. I think that he’s done an excellent job here.

“So it’s media speculation. And I kicked a lot of tires over the last couple of days and of course as soon as I say that, he’ll make another trade this afternoon and I’ll look like a dolt. But I think it’s relatively quiet.

“I think this deal caught a lot of people by surprise and most of us, as soon as we heard about it, went, ‘Well, there’s got to be more coming,’ because Sergei Gonchar’s best days are behind him. I still think that he has something to contribute.  I think he’s excellent in the room. I think he’ll be terrific with the younger players and for a power play that hasn’t been working, maybe he can still give that aspect of special teams a shot in the arm.

“But they’re also absorbing a big, beefy contract. And I know it expires at the end of the year, but in the moment that’s what the Habs have to contend with and they unload Moen’s extra year, but it still seemed a bit strange financially.”
