LeBrun on Myers, Petry, Brewer, and more

Pierre LeBrun was on TSN 1040 Monday afternoon.

On trade talk involving Eric Brewer and Tyler Myers:

“I’m not sure really how much there’s a market for Brewer at this point. I mean, I think probably his best before day has probably come and gone.

“I would say that Myers has been an intriguing proposition for someone. For starters, a lot of the money has been paid up front on his contract. He had one of those front-loaded, massive contracts where a lot of the big money has gone. So I don’t even know why Buffalo would trade him, frankly. But his name has come up again and there are teams out there that haven’t got done what they wanted to do.

“Anaheim Ducks are one team, they’ve been looking for another defenseman. They were in on Johnny Boychuk and felt the price was too high. So keep an eye on the Ducks.

“Detroit is another team I think would like to add a right-handed defenseman, a guy who can play in their top four. Now Detroit had had talks with Buffalo last spring and they ended up sort of petering out. But that’s another team to keep an eye on.

“You know, other guys that we’ve heard out there – Jeff Petry of the Oilers. We’ve heard his name. Not really the Oilers calling around, but other teams checking in on Edmonton.

“And the Ottawa Senators. They’ve got eight one-way contracts when it comes to their defencemen.  Couple of options there. Patrick Wiercioch, who’s been a scratch mostly. Or you’ve got to keep an eye on what’s going to happen with Marc Methot because his contract negotiations drag on. I don’t think Ottawa is going to let that go right to March. I mean, either he signs an extension, or he gets moved I think. So that’s another name to keep an eye on.”

Would Buffalo really want to trade Myers within division or within conference?

"Tim Murray is not done yet building in terms of picking up more draft picks and high-end prospects. He's still in the market to add up on them. Remember, he's got two first rounders coming up in June. The Islanders' one they got in the Vanek deal, and their own, in basically the deepest draft in years. So they're not done collecting from that point of view.

"Now, in terms of Myers... it was really since his rookie year when he was out of this world. He's been a huge disappointment there. Is it a fit thing. Is it something he's doing. I think there's been a lot of frustration there and that's why you've heard his name. But the thing that is interesting is a lot of the big money on that contract has already been paid. So I don't think the Sabres are giving him away."
