Lou Lamoriello may well be poised to build on his team’s surprise success this season.
Pierre LeBrun had a Monday afternoon radio hit on Winnipeg’s TSN 1290, and was asked if he saw the New York Islanders general manager adding before the trade deadline.
“I think he’s going to try to add,” predicted LeBrun. “He’s got a lot of cap room too, by the way. So yeah, they’re in a very intriguing position where the cap is not even a factor. I think there’s a lot of excitement.
“I had pegged the Islanders as a major offseason player as it is. If you really think about it, they lost Tavares and never really got a chance to try and add a big name to replace him last summer the way it all went down.
“They’re going to be aggressive. They’ve got cap room. They’re a great story. They’ve got probably the coach of the year in Barry Trotz.
“So I think A) they try to add before the 25th, and then I think this summer they’re a big-time player. Whether it’s Panarin or other guys, I think the Islanders are going to be a team to watch for sure.”
The 30-15-6 Islanders entered Monday evening’s NHL slate sitting in first place in the Metropolitan Division.
