Is Marc Bergevin trying to land Matt Duchene before Monday’s trade deadline? It depends on who you ask.
Bob McKenzie had a Friday morning radio hit on Winnipeg’s TSN 1290.
The Insider provided an intriguing angle during a larger conversation covering Duchene and Mark Stone.
“On the Duchene one, and this is a weird one, is the Montreal Canadiens,” noted McKenzie. “I’m getting some sources saying that, ‘Absolutely, 100 percent, the Montreal Canadiens are in on Matt Duchene,’ and they’d like to try and do a trade for now, and get him signed.
“And then there’s other people, other good sources are telling me, ‘No, don’t believe it. They’re not in.’
“So it’s not very often I get mixed signals to the degree that I’m getting them on the Montreal Canadiens vis-a-vis Matt Duchene, so I’ll just throw it out there that as I say, I’ve had some people tell me for sure Montreal is eager and trying to get something done, and I’ve had other well-respected people tell me, ‘Don’t believe it. It’s not going to happen.’
“So I don’t know what to make of that one.”
Duchene is wrapping up a five-year, $30 million contract.
