Continued indications are that the New York Islanders are making every effort to create a big splash on the trade front.
Pierre LeBrun had a Friday morning radio hit on Vancouver’s TSN 1040, and added to the growing speculation that the Islanders may be a player before Monday.
“Yes, and my understanding is they’re going pretty hard at Matt Duchene as well,” noted LeBrun. “That the New York Islanders would like to trade for him, and would like to sign him if possible, is what we’re hearing.
“Now again, big group of teams in there, but the Islanders have showed interest there, and they’ve showed interest in a number of other guys. I think Lou Lamoriello absolutely wants to add. He’s got the cap room - obviously he’s got the cap room after losing John Tavares and not replacing him.
“So I think they’re pretty excited about what they’ve accomplished this year. They’re in first place in the wide-open Metro, and they’d like to add.”
LeBrun and Darren Dreger joined Bob McKenzie for a special edition of the TSN Hockey Bobcast Thursday, and tackled this very subject.
Duchene can get a taste of free agency July 1, once his five-year, $30 million contract expires.
