Dreger on Duchene trade contenders

It’s getting down to crunch time on the Matt Duchene trade scene, and the front-runners are beginning to emerge.

Darren Dreger shared his latest intel during TSN’s Insider Trading segment Thursday evening, following Pierre LeBrun discussing how the Calgary Flames may want to be able to get Mark Stone on a long-term extension to get in on him via trade in the coming days.

“A number of the teams that are expressing interest in Matt Duchene are looking at it in a similar fashion,” noted Dreger. “They want to see whether or not they can extend. Although the Ottawa Senators are not in a position yet with Matt Duchene where they’ve contacted Pat Brisson, the agent for Duchene, to get involved, to negotiate, or at least have a conversation about that extension.

"We believe that there are as many as five teams in the moment that have expressed interest in Matt Duchene. The three serious contenders in the moment, and this could change literally hour-by-hour: Nashville, the Islanders, and Columbus.

“There are some who think that Buffalo is in, some who aren't so sure about that; likewise for the San Jose Sharks.

“And as a rental player, that number five probably goes up to seven or eight.”

Duchene is in the final season of a five-year, $30 million contract, and can become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
