Elliotte Friedman broke the news of the Oilers re-signing Mikko Koskinen while doing a radio hit., and then shared his thoughts on the move.
The Insider was on Calgary’s Sportsnet 960 for his weekly Monday afternoon appearance, and delivered the news about the goaltender’s contract extension.
“I just think that he’s played really well for them,” noted Friedman, when asked to elaborate on the signing as he was breaking the news. “He was a bit of a risk in terms of he hadn’t been around for awhile. He’s had a good year for them. He’s really battled.
“And as you said, they don’t have any goalies under contract for next year, and evidently they feel he’s earned an extension, and he’s really battled for them.
“This is a hard league now to find goalies, guys. We’ve expanded once two years ago, and they’re going to be expanding again in a couple of years, and how many teams have two good goalies that they’re really happy with.
“I think once you find you have an asset - and he’s a guy they know - then I think you go with that asset and you take a gamble on the guys you know.”
Koskinen had been signed to his one-year, $2.5 million contact in May, so he’s been eligible for an extension since January 1.
Cam Talbot is in the final season of a three-year, $12.5 million contract, and can become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Friedman had also discussed several Oilers-related topics at the beginning of the hit.
