Dreger on Kings’ trade ask for Muzzin

As teams look to shore up their blueline leading into the trade deadline, Jake Muzzin can be had for the right price.

Darren Dreger had a Friday morning radio hit on Toronto’s TSN 1050.

The Insider was asked about the Los Angeles Kings defenseman, whose “name is on everyone’s trade board.”

“And it should be. He’s a quality Top-4 defenseman. I don’t think that there’s much doubt of that” said Dreger. “The asking price for Jake Muzzin, though, apparently is off the charts. It’s like a first-round draft pick and a prospect, if not a top prospect.

“And at least at this point, that’s described as exorbitant. It’s too much. For the Toronto Maple Leafs, even though you have the name and the position is interesting, Toronto has a very specific need. Maybe if they get close to February 25 and a left-shot defenseman is available they just cut their losses because it’s an upgrade, and they go that direction; but they’re pretty specific to wanting that balance and the need of a right-shot defenseman.

“Rob Blake, he’s got a couple of players - more than that, in fact - that are drawing interest. Forward Tyler Toffoli is another one that teams are kicking tires on. But at this stage, the cost - the asking price - is just too high.”

Muzzin has this season and next remaining on his five-year, $20 million contract, which carries a $4 million cap hit and does not include any trade protection.

Toffoli is in the middle of a three-year, $13.8 million contract, which comes with a $4.6 million cap hit.
