With trade talk appearing to pick up around the NHL, it seems one potentially deal recently landed a little short of its landing spot.
Pierre LeBrun passed along his latest intel during Thursday’s edition of TSN’s Insider Trading, and also revealed another potential match in the works.
“One team that almost had a trade last week, my understanding is the Hurricanes had a deal fall through at the eleventh hour with a team in the Western Conference,” indicated LeBrun. “We know what they’re looking for, they’re looking for a Top-6 forward. That’s why they were in on William Nylander all season long until Nylander re-signed with the Leafs.
“But there’s another Toronto player that we believe Carolina has talked about internally, and that’s Kasperi Kapanen, who’s having a banner season for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He happens to be RFA at the end of the year. Carolina, like a lot of other teams around the league, wondering how the Leafs can re-sign all of these young stars.
“So interest from Carolina. It has not been formalized as far as making an offer yet to the Leafs, but I think that will come. Keep in mind Carolina with an abundance of defensemen. We know that, and that’s primary need No. 1 for the Toronto Maple Leafs.”
Kapanen is in the final season of his entry-level contract.
