Even if William Nylander signs with the Maple Leafs in the coming days, his future with the team may still be very much in question.
The restricted free agent winger has until Saturday’s deadline to sign a contract if he wants to play in the NHL this season, and Elliotte Friedman had a Wednesday appearance on Sportsnet’s Tim and Sid to provide his latest sentiment on how things are unfolding between the player’s camp and the team.
Once the contract portion of the discussion was done, the Insider said this:
“The one thing I do believe, no matter what happens, is that this will be William Nylander’s final season as a Toronto Maple Leaf,” asserted Friedman. “Whether he signs or whether he doesn’t sign, this is going to be it. And even if he does sign, I think Toronto trades him by the draft at the latest.”
“One way or the other, I think this is over,” he added. “I would be surprised if he played for Toronto next season.”
Interesting discussion overall, worth checking out.
Nylander is coming out of his entry-level contract.
