Friedman on how close Bennett trades may have come

Elliotte Friedman had a mention in his most recent 31 Thoughts about teams having had trade interest in Sam Bennett in recent years, but how close might any of those deals have actually come to happening?

During a Friday morning radio hit on Calgary’s Sportsnet 960, the NHL Insider was asked that very question.

“I don’t get the sense that it’s ever been close to the point where it was actually imminent,” began Friedman. “I think they’ve gone far down the road at times. I think there are situations where maybe people thought they were getting close to a deal, but I don’t think it’s ever been at a point where anyone ever said, ‘We’re about to get this done.’

“I think at the end of the day, the Flames have always looked at what happened with Taylor Hall in Edmonton and said, ‘Yeah, I’m not sure we really want to do this.’

“I think they’re still kind of in that point right now. I think what’s happened up the road has really influenced the Flames’ decisions when it comes to Bennett.”

Bennett, who was the fourth overall selection in the 2014 draft, is in the second season of a two-year, $3.9 million contract.

Friedman mentioned in 31 Thoughts that the Anaheim Ducks, Montreal Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyers, and Tampa Bay Lightning are among the teams who have inquired about Bennett through the years.
